Improving California’s Infrastructure and Development | | - Co-Chair of the Commission on Building for the 21st Century. This blue-ribbon
panel of business, academic and policy leaders was entrusted to identify the state’s infrastructure needs and develop a comprehensive long-term capital investment plan to finance public building needs. - The Commission issued an interim report, making recommendations on bond proposals
for the March 2000 ballot, which led to Propositions 12 and 13. State voters passed both measures into law, helping to provide millions for water management and parks projects. - Served as Co-Chair of the “Yes on 42” campaign – which requires that gasoline sales
revenues be dedicated solely to improving transportation projects, such as roads and highways. - Rebuilding the Commission on Economic Development. Commission initiatives
include: spurring investment in minority-owned banks, hosting hearings on increasing inner-city economic development, and bringing together minority business leaders for roundtable meetings. - Co-sponsor of SB 1227 - Burton, an important housing bond that will facilitate
the construction of new homes for low and moderate-income families and assist them with rent and down payments for new homes. This bond is a fundamental step in addressing the urgent housing shortage in California. - Actively working with the Bay Area Sports Organizing Committee to bring the Summer
Olympic Games to California. Supported legislation, (SB 1987 – Burton), to strengthen California's bid to host these games. The Olympic games are expected to generate over $7.4 billion in revenues for California if held in the San Francisco Bay Area. In addition, the Bay Area site would be accessible to full public transportation and 2,500 new units of transit-accessible and environmentally sustainable housing would be created. - Worked with Mexico’s Secretary of Agriculture, Livestock and Rural
Development to ease trade restrictions and reopen Mexican markets to California’s raw poultry products. In addition, Bustamante initiated talks to lift restrictions on specialty apples on behalf of the California apple industry. - Approved the issuance of three infrastructure bonds to create jobs by providing
low-cost financing for a wide range of public works projects. - Supported a legislative package of measures related to economic development and
consistent with the mission of the Commission for Economic Development. - Sponsored SB 1647 - Perata, a measure intended to place a public infrastructure,
security and investment bond before California’s voters. Investment in infrastructure is critical to safeguard our economy and enhance the standard of living for all California residents.
